Der Fuehrer's face (1943)
Der Fuehrer's Face was published on January 1, 1943. It features Donald Duck as a Nazi, the film was originally called Donald Duck in Nutzi Land. It starts off with Donald being woken up by force and threatened constantly with guns if he doesn't do what he is told. Donald works in a factory, producing artillery for war and praising Hitler everytime his picture is in sight. During his work hours he is given a paid "vacation" which is just a backdrop with scenery for 5 seconds. When he returns back to his job, the speed of production is increased and he begins to lose his mind. He later wakes up sporting Americanized Pajamas realizing it was all a dream. He runs to his window to a miniature replica of the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom, and embraces it. His words of relief were,
" I am glad to be a citizen of the United States of America". This film basically implies the lack of freedom in Germany compared to America. It was used as propaganda in order to win people over to the American cause by showing how the enemy controlled people's daily lives and deprived them from rights. |
